Visits :
Tuesday afternoon
The St Stephen Basilica is a Christian basilica of Budapest. It is to be found in the V District, and more particularly in the Lipótváros neighborhood. It’s a very touristic place; we can find a shopping street close to it and a lot of restaurants which sell specialties from all over the world.
The church is named after Saint Stephen I of Hungary, the first King of Hungary who lived from 975 to 1038. It was the sixth largest church building in Hungary before 1920. Today, it is the third largest church building in Hungary. In this Basilica we can find St Stephen’s right hand as a reliquary and on St Istvàn day which is a national day the monks go for a ceremonial walk around the city with it. Now it’s a place where there are concerts and markets because it’s in the city center not far from the Parliament, and a touristic place that we can visit in addition to its role of a Christian basilica.
The National Opera House
The Hungarian State Opera House is a opera house located in central Budapest, on Andrássy út. Designed by Miklós Ybl, a major figure of 19th century Hungarian architecture, the construction lasted from 1875 to 1884 and was funded by the city of Budapest and by Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria-Hungary. It was built in part with Italian marble. The Hungarian Opera House opened to the public on the September 27, 1884. It was built in neo-Renaissance style, with elements of Baroque. The auditorium holds 1261 seats. It is horseshoe shaped and has the third best acoustics in Europe after La Scala in Milan and the Palais Garnier in Paris. Although many opera houses have been built since, the Budapest Opera House is still among the best in terms of the acoustics. There are guided tours in the building in six languages (English, German, Spanish, French, Italian and Hungarian) almost every day. In front of the building are statues of Ferenc Erkel and Franz Liszt. Liszt is the best known Hungarian composer even though he also lived in Austria. Erkel composed the Hungarian national anthem, and was the first music director of the Opera House; he was also founder of the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra. From 1888 to 1897 Gustav Mahler, an Austrian composer, was the opera house’s music director.
Nyugati Pàlyaudvar
Budapest-Nyugati pályaudvar (English: Budapest Western railway station), is one of the three main railway terminals in Budapest, Hungary.
The station was planned by Auguste de Serres and was built by the Eiffel Company. It was opened on 28 October 1877.
Beside the railway station and partially above its open area there is the WestEnd City Center shopping mall.
Wednesday Afternoon
Parliament
The Hungarian Parliament Building is the seat of the National Assembly of Hungary, one of Europe's oldest legislative buildings, a notable landmark of Hungary and a popular tourist destination of Budapest. It lies in Lajos Kossuth Square, on the bank of the Danube. It is currently the largest building in Hungary.
Wednesday, we went to the Parliament. First, we had to pass an identity security procedure. When we entered the Parliament, we walked up great ornamental stairs and saw frescoes on the ceiling. After that, we also had an exceptional opportunity to attend conference at the Parliament by a representative of the Ecological Party who spoke about the situation of Hungary in europe and some european political issues. Later we ate at the parliament's cafeteria; just before we had a guided tour of the building. We saw the Holy Crown, Sword, Sceptre and Globus cruciger of Hungary; the Assembly hall of the House of Magnates; the Grand Stairwell; etc.
Thursday Afternoon
The Children's Train and the Libegö
The Children’s train is special since everything is ruled by children. It Hungary, it is a real honour for kids to be able to work there only once. This special transport goes from Huvösvölgy to Janos-hegy. It also makes a stop at Normafa hill. In this train, you mostly cross forest but you can also see a wonderful view of the city. The inside of the train looks quite old, which could mean that it was already used during communism.
We stopped at Janos-hegy, where we had to climb the hill by foot. Once we arrived on the top, we learned that Hungarians used this place to ski during winter. Two solutions were offered to us to go down the hill: we could either take the children’s train again, or choose to go on the other side of the hill and take the libegö which is a chairlift for two persons. We chose the second solution and took the chairlift by pair. We arrived right back in the centre of the city.
